Round 10 Feature Match:
Alonzo Peters Versus Matthew Wright

Alonzo Peters and Matthew Wright were both 7-2 heading into this round.  The winner of this Match would have a shot at Day 2 – the loser would most certainly not.  This one was for all the chips.  Peters is playing Gladiator Beasts, while Wright is running Blackwings.

Peters opened the match with “Gladiator Beast's Respite,” shuffling back “Gladiator Beast Laquari” and “Gladiator Beast Retiari” to his deck to draw three cards.  He Summoned “Gladiator Beast Laquari” and ended.

Wright had “Raiza the Storm Monarch,” “Blackwing – Bora the Spear,” “Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind,” “Reckless Greed,” “Monster Reborn,” and “Mind Control.”  “Did I really just draw an OTK?”  Wright started running the numbers.  “I’m 100 off!...”  His eyes lit up.  “No, wait!”  He normal Summoned Bora, Special Summoned Gale, and activated Gale’s effect to cut Laquari’s ATK in half totally needlessly.  He Synchro Summoned “Dark Strike Fighter,” activated “Mind Control,” then blinked and realized he’d won.  “Monster Reborn” brought back Gale, he Synchro Summoned with Laquari for a second “Dark Strike Fighter,” and each Fighter attacked for 2600 damage – 5200 total.

The Fighters then tributed themselves for their effects, dealing 1400 damage each – a total of 2800 damage, for exactly 8000 total!

Matthew Wright scores the fastest Feature Match win of the day, demonstrating the type of craziness that makes Blackwings so deadly!  Both competitors sided and shuffled, and game 2 started in mere moments.

Peters Set a monster, Set a card to his back row, and ended.  Wright had “Mind Control,” Bora, Gale, “Solemn Judgment,” “Krebons,” and “D.D. Crow.”  He activated “Mind Control,” took Peters’ “Sangan,” and Flip Summoned it.  He Normal Summoned “Krebons,” Synchro Summoned “Magical Android,” and Peters searched his Deck for “Rescue Cat.”  “Magical Android” attacked for 2400 damage, Wright Set “Solemn Judgment,” and play was to Peters – Wright went to 8600 Life Points from the Android’s effect.

“Cold Wave” was Peters’ first move, and he Summoned the “Rescue Cat” he searched for last turn.  That got him two “Gladiator Beast Samnites,” and he Special Summoned “Test Tiger” from his hand.  He tagged out Samnite for “Gladiator Beast Bestiari,” destroyed Wright’s Set “Solemn Judgment,” then tagged out to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”!  Gyzarus destroyed the Android with its effect, attacked for 2400 damage, and Peters tagged out to two Laquari.

Wright Normal Summoned “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame,” then Special Summoned Bora the Spear and Gale the Whirlwind!  He activated Gale’s effect, halved the ATK of one of the Laquaris, then ran some more numbers.  He tuned Gale to Bora to Synchro Summon “Blackwing Armor Master,” attacked the reduced Laquari with Shura, and used Shura’s effect to Special Summon another Gale!  “Blackwing Armor Master” attacked over the remaining Laquari for 400 damage, Gale attacked for 1300 damage, and Peters was down to 3150 Life Points.  In Main Phase 2 Wright Synchro Summoned “Dark Strike Fighter” and ended – he was just a few hundred damage removed from victory.

Peters drew to four cards in hand with one card Set in his back row.  He activated “Monster Reborn,” targeted “Rescue Cat,” but lost out to “D.D. Crow” – that was all Peters could take!  He immediately scooped up and offered Wright the handshake.

Mathew Wright finishes 8-2 with Blackwings, and may make Day 2. Joseph Franzo has already made the Top 16 with Blackwings – we may see not one, but two Blackwing Duelists in the playoff rounds!
