Dueling Gets A Little More Colorful…
A dose of new hotness arrived at Gen Con on Friday morning – a whole new casual play program, arriving at an Official Tournament Store near you later this year. The revamped Duelist League is getting started here at Gen Con, giving some very cool incentives to Duelists if they’re willing to make some new friends. Check it out!

What you’re seeing here are the new Duelist League Promos. Picture Normal Rares (the ones with the silver-print lettering), but with a new range of foil colors on the name. The new Duelist League will offer classic cards in a variety of colors, so you can pick your favorite and then trick out your Deck in the color of your choice. The first set includes cards like “Mystical Space Typhoon,” “Legendary Jujitsu Master,” “Blackwing - Bora the Spear,” and a whole lot more – twenty cards in all, and so far we’ve seen three different colors this weekend.

Here you can see “Legendary Jujitsu Master” and “Colossal Fighter” in three different Duelist League foils: Copper, Green, and Wedgewood (light blue). Players earn promos by winning Duelist Cards from other Duelists. Each Duelist begins a two-hour League session with 3 Duelist Cards. Each time you beat another Duelist, you get one of their Duelist Cards. If you have five, you can cash out and choose a promo card of our choice. If the 2 hours runs out, all remaining Duelists can pick 1 promo card each, starting with the Duelists with the most Duelist Cards (so those with 4 Duelist Cards choose first, etc.). When you lose and hand over a Duelist Card, you write your name and Deck type on it, so the cards become a log of the competitors that have won and lost them. It’s also a way to learn people’s names and make new friends.
Duel The Master Is Go!
Gen Con is only about halfway done, but the tally board over at “Duel the Master” is already packed with themarks of fallen challengers! The first must-play attraction on many attendees’ lists is the “Duel the Master” stage, where brave challengers get a chance to throwdown against Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc’s (KDE) R&D staff.
Daring Duelists spin a numbered wheel to see which of R&D’s 10 Decks they’ll face, and each features unique gameconditions that make things new and interesting.
The KDE R&D staff on-hand is playing everything from Morphtronics and Beasts to Aliens and Geminis, showing off cards many attendees aren’t familiar with. Victories are scarce so far, but rewards are plentiful: defeated challengers received a Crimson Crisis Booster Pack just for trying their luck.
The handful of lucky Duelists who manage to eke out a win walk away with boosters equal to the win streak of the R&D Deck they defeated. If the Deck you face has beaten twenty Duelists without losing, you’ll win twenty packs, plus your participation pack.
And it’s free! You can’t say no to that.
Meanwhile, At The Booth…
Meanwhile, over in the Exhibitors' Hall, the Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. booth is packed with staff teaching new players and curious onlookers alike how to play the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME. Also on display are tons of upcoming products that you’ll be seeing in stores over the coming months. Here’s what’s being shown…

Become Your Own Token Card
One of the biggest attractions two weeks ago at San Diego Comic Con were custom Token Cards. On-hand was a photographer with a green screen booth and card printing equipment, offering free Token Cards with your picture on them. Participants can strike a pose and then receive a Token Card, printed on the background of their choice.

Sweet, New Mats!
Lots of the big buss this weekend has been about new prizes. The first events were Win-A-Mat tournaments and the new Duelist League, and both were awarding never-before-seen prizes.
Win-A-Mat tournaments have been really popular events this year, and now the first Game Mat in the series is being retired to make way for the second. The Yusei Fudo & “Stardust Dragon/Assault Mode” mat will no longer be offered as a tournament prize, but a new mat featuring Jack Atlas & “Red Dragon Archfiend/ Assault Mode” is taking its place.
If you’ve never played in a Win-A-Mat tournament yourself, each tournament is a single elimination tournament with a Game Mat awarded to the winner.
Scoring one of these new Jack Atlas mats is as easy as winning a few rounds back-to-back, which should keep the tables packed here today! Now if only someone will trade me theirs…
2010 Regionals Binders
The first 2010 Regional Qualifier was held at this year's U.S. National Championship. Today marks the second chance for Duelists to earn their invites to next year’s Championship. Regional Qualifiers at Gen Con are/were held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and are 16-Player Regional Qualifiers. These Qualifiers (or “grinders” as they’re called by some) are four-round Single Elimination events, and the winner scores their own invitation to the 2010 National Championship. Victors also walk away with a 2010 Regional Game Mat (featuring the Lightsworn) and yet another new prize never offered before…

The new Regional Qualifier binder! Modeled after the 2009 National Championship binder, the Regional version will be awarded to Top 4 finishers in upcoming Regional tournaments. The new Qualifier season begins soon, so pretty soon you’ll get a chance to win one of these binders yourself. In the mean time, a lucky few will snag an early copy here at Gen Con! (Keep in mind that standard Regional Qualifiers near you are not 16-player Single Elimination events. They will be open to all - as long as there's room - and will be standard Swiss Pairing format.)
