What a way to kick off SHONEN JUMP Championship Indianapolis! Two-time SHONEN JUMP Champion Paul Levitin is set to take his new Twilight build against fellow SHONEN JUMP Champ Ryan Spicer, and we are ready for a huge match! Spicer is running Gladiator Beasts, which is Levitin’s most feared matchup. He’s siding thirteen cards just for Gladiator Beasts, so this should be interesting.
Levitin opened with “Solar Recharge,” “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” “Crush Card Virus,” “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness,” “Allure of Darkness,” and “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter.”
He discarded Garoth for Recharge, tossed Aurkus and Lyla to his Graveyard, and drew another Recharge and Lyla. He tossed both to activate the Recharge, nabbing “Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive” and “Heavy Storm.” Then he sent “Necro Gardna” and “Judgment Dragon”! He activated Allure next, drawing Charge and “Chaos Sorcerer,” and removed his Dekoichi. He definitely wanted that Gorz and the “Chaos Sorcerer.” He set Ryko and ended a strong first turn!
Play was to Spicer. He Normal Summoned “Gladiator Beast Samnite,” attacked, and hit into Ryko – both monsters were destroyed and Paul sent “Monster Reincarnation,” “Trap Dustshoot,” and “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin” to the Graveyard. Spicer set a Spell or Trap.
Levitin drew another Charge next turn and activated it, sending “Dark Armed Dragon,” Lumina, and a second “Necro Gardna” to his Graveyard. That got him Aurkus from his Deck. He Normal Summoned it, attacked for 1200 damage, and ended, sending “Black Salvo” and another Reincarnation to his Graveyard.
Spicer Summoned another Samnite next turn, attacked, and Levitin blocked with one of his two copies of “Necro Gardna.” Spicer set a second Spell or Trap Card, looked through Levitin’s Graveyard, and shuffled his hand before ending.
Levitin drew Judgment Dragon, activated “Heavy Storm” to blow away Spicer’s “Bottomless Trap Hole” and “Gladiator Beast War Chariot,” and he started running numbers. “Charge of the Light Brigade” sent “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk,” “Honest,” and “Allure of Darkness” to the Graveyard, getting another “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter.” He then removed “Black Salvo” and “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” from his Graveyard to Special Summon “Chaos Sorcerer,” and attacked Samnite with it. Aurkus attacked next, and Spicer was down to 4900 Life Points. Levitin Set Ryko to end, with that “Judgment Dragon” still in hand. He sent “Monster Reborn” and his third “Necro Gardna” to the Graveyard in his End Phase.
Spicer summoned “Gladiator Beast Murmillo,” attacked into Ryko, and Ryko destroyed it. Spicer set one Spell or Trap and ended, clearly knowing this wasn’t going well. Levitin drew “Brain Control.”
Aurkus swung and Spicer flipped “Mirror Force,” wiping the field after counting five cards remaining in Levitin’s Deck. Levitin, still holding that Gorz and now having a cleared field, ended his turn. Spicer brought back Samnite with “Monster Reborn,” Normal Summoned “Rescue Cat,” and sent it to the Graveyard for two copies of “Test Tiger”! Unless he ran a second Murmillo, Levitin’s Gorz was going to be pretty good here. Spicer seemed to recognize that risk, and attacked with all his small monsters before investing in something bigger.
Samnite attacked first – Levitin blocked with his second of three “Necro Gardnas.” One “Test Tiger” attacked, Levitin summoned Gorz, and got his “Emissary of Darkness Token” in Defense Position. Spicer moved to Main Phase 2, traded his Samnite for “Gladiator Beast Equeste” with “Test Tiger” to take back Samnite, then brought in another Equeste to get Chariot. He set two Spell or Trap Cards to finish out.
Levitin drew another Dekoichi, and activated “Brain Control” to take Equeste. He was holding “Judgment Dragon,” “Crush Card Virus,” and that Dekoichi, and knew Spicer had already used his “Mirror Force” and one of his copies of “Bottomless Trap Hole.” He opted to play conservatively though, not summoning the Dragon. He turned his Token to attack position, swung for 600 damage, and attacked with Gorz – into “Phoenix Wing Wind Blast.” Spicer discarded Samnite for it. Levitin swung for 1600 with Equeste, then Special Summoned “Judgment Dragon” to clear the field! Spicer lost his Chariot, and didn’t get his Equeste back in the End Phase. Paul sent four of his five remaining cards to his Graveyard, scoring a Special Summoned “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast.”
Spicer topdecked “Rescue Cat”! He Normal Summoned it, sent it to his Graveyard to get “Test Tiger” and Samnite, and tagged out Samnite with Tiger… but there was nothing he could do. There was just no stopping “Judgment Dragon” next turn.
Paul Levitin claims the win with no cards left in his Deck! After some quick siding the second Duel got started. Twenty-three minutes remained in the round.
“Gladiator Beast Laquari” and a Set Spell or Trap got things started for Spicer, and Levitin fired back with “Solar Recharge” – he discarded “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast,” drew two, and sent “Plaguespreader Zombie” to the Graveyard. “Charge of the Light Brigade” sent “Honest,” another Recharge, and “Necro Gardna” to his Graveyard next, getting him “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter.” He Set a monster, set “Crush Card Virus,” and ended, bluffing the Ryko that was still in his hand.
Spicer Set a monster, then revealed it for a Contact Fusion. “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus” hit the field as Spicer sent his two Gladiators back to his deck, and Paul revealed his trickery, Tributing “Necro Gardna” for “Crush Card Virus” as Chain Link 2! Spicer lost his Gyzarus, then pitched “X-Saber Airbellum” and Equeste from his hand. He revealed his last two in-hand cards: “Rescue Cat” and “Test Tiger.”
Levitin drew to five, holding “Monster Reincarnation,” “Judgment Dragon,” Ryko, “Honest,” and “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress.” He summoned Lyla, attacked for 1700 damage, and activated her effect to destroy Spicer’s Set War Chariot. In the End Phase he sent “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk,” Gorz, and “Bottomless Trap Hole” to his Graveyard. He had Ryko, “Honest,” and “Judgment Dragon” left to deal with whatever Spicer threw at Lyla next turn. Spicer was just outcarded.
Spicer drew and revealed “Light-Imprisoning Mirror,” then Normal Summoned “Rescue Cat” to trade it for two copies of “Gladiator Beast Samnite.” He attacked Lyla with one, and Paul removed one “Necro Gardna.” The second Gardna blocked the second Samnite, forcing Spicer to Special Summon “Test Tiger” in Main Phase 2 or else lose everything he got from “Rescue Cat.” The obvious play was Gyzarus, a play Levitin would wreck next turn. Spicer took Equeste instead, returning War Chariot to his hand and setting his last two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.
“Mirror of Oaths” came off the top of Levitin’s Deck. He had two Lightsworn (Ehren and Wulf) in his Graveyard, plus “Plaguespreader Zombie.” He returned a card to the top of his Deck to try and Special Summon the Zombie, and after a lot of thinking Spicer let it hit the field. Levitin Tuned it to Lyla, brought out “Goyo Guardian,” and attacked Equeste. Spicer dropped to 5100 Life Points and Levitin took control of his Gladiator Beast. He set “Mirror of Oaths” and ended.
Spicer drew “Book of Moon” and Set it. Levitin turned Equeste to Attack Position, swung for 1600 damage, and Spicer took it. He took 2800 more damage from Goyo and was left with just 700 Life Points. Next turn he Set his draw to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, but when Levitin attacked with “Goyo Guardian” next turn Spicer couldn’t stop both of Levitin’s attackers. He took the shot from Goyo and gave Levitin the handshake.
Paul Levitin absolutely dominates Ryan Spicer in our first feature match of the day!
