Tom Walter is playing a custom-tailored “Skill Drain” Plant Deck. His opponent is long-time Duelist Tyrome Cox, who placed highly at SHONEN JUMP Championship Charlotte. He’s undefeated here today playing Synchro Cat, which may be a problem for him if Walter can get “Skill Drain” to the field. Let’s see what happens.
Cox opened the match with “Allure of Darkness,” drawing two and removing “Gravekeeper's Guard” to complete Allure’s effect. He Set a monster and ended. Walter drew, and had “Trade-In,” “Sangan,” “Book of Moon,” “Mystic Tomato,” “Pot of Avarice” and “Skill Drain.” He Set “Book of Moon,” “Skill Drain,” and “Sangan.” But Cox hit him with “Heavy Storm” next turn!
He followed up by Flip Summoning “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter,” sending “Smashing Ground,” “Mind Control,” and “Summoner Monk” to his Graveyard to destroy “Sangan” with Ryko’s effect. Not so hot for Cox – “Sangan” got Walter a copy of “Lonefire Blossom,” and Ryko attacked for only 200 damage. A Set Spell or Trap ended Cox’s turn.
Walter drew another “Book of Moon” and Normal Summoned “Lonefire Blossom.” He Tributed it to Summon another from his Deck, Tributed that one to Summon a third, then Tributed that to Special Summon “Tytannial, Princess of Camellias.” His Graveyard was loaded with four monsters for “Pot of Avarice,” and he Set his second “Book of Moon.” He lost it to “Mystical Space Typhoon” in his End Phase.
Cox Set a single Spell or Trap Card. Walter drew “Thunder King Rai-Oh,” Normal Summoned “Mystic Tomato,” and attacked for 1400 damage! Tytannial followed next, swinging for another 2800 damage. Cox was down to 1200 Life Points, while Walter still had 7800. “Your move.” Play was to Cox.
He Set a monster and ended. Walter made an attack with Tytannial, slammed into Cox’s face-down “Gravekeeper's Guard,” and Walter Tributed Tytannial to negate Guard’s effect and keep “Mystic Tomato” on the field. That left the Tomato free to make a direct attack and the first Duel was over!
Tom Walter wins Duel 1! An early loss to “Heavy Storm” fails to hold Walter back, as Cox just seemed to draw nothing of use, turn after turn. Both competitors did a little Side Decking before quickly shuffling and presenting their Decks for Duel 2.
Cox opened with a Set card to each zone. Walter had “Monster Reborn,” “Thunder King Rai-Oh,” “Pot of Avarice,” “Book of Moon,” Barbaros, and “Card Trooper.” He Summoned Thunder King, lost it to “Bottomless Trap Hole,” Set “Book of Moon,” and next turn Cox Flip Summoned “Mystic Tomato.” He attacked for 1400 damage, Set another Spell or Trap, and ended. Walter was up.
He drew “Sangan,” Normal Summoned “Beast King Barbaros” and lost out to a second “Bottomless Trap Hole”! “Ooof! Your go.”
Cox Normal Summoned “X-Saber Airbellum,” tried to attack, and was met with “Book of Moon.” He scored another direct shot with “Mystic Tomato” and ended. Walter drew “Bottomless Trap Hole,” insurance against Airbellum next turn, and Summoned “Card Trooper.” He sent “Mystic Tomato,” “Legendary Jujitsu Master,” and “Lonefire Blossom” to his Graveyard with its effect, and brought back the Blossom with “Monster Reborn.” Three Lonefire Tributes later he controlled “Tytannial, Princess of Camellias.” Things were looking up.
He sent back the three Lonefires, “Legendary Jujitsu Master,” and “Mystic Tomato” to activate “Pot of Avarice,” drawing another “Bottomless Trap Hole” and “Lightning Vortex.” He sent “Card Trooper” to attack “Mystic Tomato.” Cox Special Summoned “Sangan,” Tytannial attacked the face-down “X-Saber Airbellum,” and Walter Set “Bottomless Trap Hole.” “Your move.”
Cox drew to five cards in hand and attacked “Card Trooper” with “Sangan.” Trooper’s effect let Walter draw “Thunder King Rai-Oh.” Cox ended, and Walter Summoned Thunder King. He attacked “Sangan” with it to stop Cox from searching his Deck with “Sangan’s” effect, and he made a direct attack with Tytannial. Cox was down to 3800 Life Points, while Walter had 4600 remaining. “Your turn.”
Cox activated “Mind Control,” targeting Thunder King, and Walter Tributed Tytannial to negate his opponent’s Spell Card. Cox was fazed for a moment, a bit unclear on the fact that Tytannial can protect more than just Plants. He Summoned “X-Saber Airbellum,” lost it to “Bottomless Trap Hole,” and Walter was up. He Normal Summoned “Sangan,” attacked for 1000 damage, and tried to attack with Thunder King – Cox blocked the attack with “Book of Moon.” A Set card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone ended Walter’s turn.
Cox drew. He activated “Allure of Darkness,” removed “Dark Armed Dragon” for its effect, and activated “Heavy Storm”! He Normal Summoned “X-Saber Airbellum” attacked Thunder King, and ended with nothing else on the field.
Walter Normal Summoned “Lonefire Blossom” next turn, Tributing his way through all three copies he had. He Special Summoned “Tytannial, Princess of Camellias” and then cleared Cox’s field with “Lightning Vortex” for the win! “Sangan” attacked, and Tytannial finished the match.
Tom Walter takes an early hit from Tyrome Cox, but fights back to take a commanding match win! Tom Walter is now undefeated with a 5-0 record. If he keeps playing like that, he’s a shoe-in for Day 2.
