Round 3 Feature Match:
Shane Scurry versus Chris Flores

Both of these competitors are former SHONEN JUMP Champions, and each is playing a popular Deck seen here today. Flores is running Synchro Cat, while Scurry is playing Lightsworn.

But each Duelist is also wielding personal tech cards in their Main Deck. Like Chris Bowling, Flores is running “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter” over “Sea Koala.” He’s Main Decking a pair of them. Scurry is Main Decking three copies of “Waboku.” So far it’s worked out pretty well – both Duelists are undefeated.

Scurry opened the match with “Honest,” “Monster Reincarnation,” “Beckoning Light,” “Solar Recharge,” “Charge of the Light Brigade,” and “Necro Gardna.” He activated “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sent “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness,” “Heavy Storm,” and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to the Graveyard, and searched his Deck for “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior.” He Special Summoned Wulf and discarded Garoth for “Solar Recharge.”

That got him “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel” and “Foolish Burial,” while sending “Necro Gardna” and “Gold Sarcophagus” to his Graveyard. “Go ahead, go ahead.” Scurry was off to a strong start, and “Necro Gardna” would keep him safe from any overly-ambitious plays Flores might attempt. Flores knew it, and Set one card to each zone.

Scurry drew “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin,” and Tributed Wulf for “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel.” He sent “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” “Monster Reincarnation,” Charge, and “Honest” to his Graveyard to power Celestia’s effect, destroying Flores’ face-down “Gravekeeper's Spy” and forcing him to chain “Threatening Roar.” That left Scurry with “Beckoning Light,” Reincarnation, “Necro Gardna,” “Honest,” “Foolish Burial,” and Jain in hand. “Go ahead.”

“Cards in your hand?”

“Six” replied Scurry.

Flores drew to five cards in-hand, Set one to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, and ended. “Pass to you.” Scurry drew “Gold Sarcophagus” and activated it immediately, searching his Deck to remove “Judgment Dragon” from the game. He’d get to claim it in two turns. For now he pressed a bit, Normal Summoning “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin.” He attacked, and Flores responded by activating “Scapegoat.” Scurry’s Lightsworn monsters destroyed two Tokens by battle, and he Set “Beckoning Light.” He sent “Trap Dustshoot” and “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel” to his Graveyard in the End Phase.

Next turn Flores activated “Cold Wave.” “Four cards in hand” pondered Scurry aloud. He chained his “Beckoning Light,” sending four cards to the Graveyard (including a second “Necro Gardna”) and taking back “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,”, and two copies of “Honest”! With two “Necro Gardna” and two “Honest” Scurry might be in good shape to survive this turn. If he could keep a monster on the field despite the threat of “Arcanite Magician,” he’d be able to Tribute Summon his second Celestia and turn Flores’ own “Cold Wave” against him.

“I will pass my turn” stated Flores flatly. You could almost hear him groan. Play was to Scurry, who drew a second Lumina. He Normal Summoned her, discarded his second copy to Special Summon “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” and sent Lumina after a Sheep Token. Jain attacked the last Sheep and Scurry attacked with Garoth next. Flores needed to think a bit – he was either considering Special Summoning “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness,” or was bluffing it in an attempt to stave off Celestia. He opted to give no response to Garoth’s attack. Celestia struck for 2300 damage, and Flores Special Summoned Gorz and an Emissary of Darkness Token!

Scurry sent “Waboku,” “Honest,” and “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” to his Graveyard for Lumina’s effect. That triggered Garoth’s effect, sending “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid” and another Wulf to the Graveyard! That was huge – Scurry drew two cards with Garoth and Special Summoned Wulf. He sent Ryko and “Solar Recharge” to the Graveyard next courtesy of Jain, then sent “Waboku” and “Plaguespreader Zombie” to the Graveyard with Garoth. It was a massive End Phase, but Scurry had just seven cards left in his deck and had locked his field – he wouldn’t be able to Special Summoned “Judgment Dragon” next turn unless he did something drastic. All Flores had to do was survive.

Next turn Flores Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, then activated “Allure of Darkness.” He drew two cards, heaved a sigh, and removed Summoner Monk for Allure’s effect. He Normal Summoned “Rescue Cat,” Tributed it, and Special Sumoned “Neo-Spacian Dark Panther” and “X-Saber Airbellum.” He Tuned Airbellum to Panther, Synchro Summoned “Goyo Guardian,” attacked with his Token into Lumina. “I know you have the Honest, but I’ve got to try for something.” Scurry let it go, eager to have somewhere to put his “Judgment Dragon.” There’s no way Flores didn’t see what was happening – he must have had something planned.

He did not. He sent Gorz to attack Wulf, lost out to “Honest,” and then attacked with “Goyo Guardian.” Goyo slammed into Scurry’s second “Honest” and Flores immediately scooped. I guess he just decided that he couldn’t survive next turn against the second copy of Celestia. Sure enough, he revealed that his two face-down cards were useless in the face of Celestia and double Honest next turn: “Heavy Storm” and “Crush Card Virus.” He knew Scurry had the win.

Shane Scurry comes perilously close to Decking out, but takes a dominating win anyways! A big opening turns into a big win in Duel 1 of this match. Both Duelists went for their Side Decks and the second Duel began moments later.

Flores started the Duel with a Set card to each zone. Scurry opened with a huge hand yet again, holding “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” “Judgment Dragon,” “Waboku,” “Charge of the Light Brigade,” “Solar Recharge,” and “Threatening Roar”! He activated Recharge, sending “Necro Gardna” and two “Honest” to the Graveyard – definitely a mixed bag. He searched out “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” discarded Garoth for “Solar Recharge,” and drew “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,” and Lumina. He then sent “Heavy Storm” and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to the Graveyard, Special Summoning Wulf! He Tributed it for Celestia, sent Garoth, Charge, “Trap Dustshoot,” and another “Necro Gardna” to the Graveyard for her effect, then destroyed “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter” with it. Flores chained “Threatening Roar,” Scurry’s other target. Locked down by “Threatening Roar” Scurry Set “Waboku,” and play was to Flores.

He Normal Summoned “X-Saber Airbellum,” then activated “Mind Control” to take Celestia! He gave up both to Synchro Summon “Colossal Fighter” and Scurry played it up as a big loss. Flores was smart though, counting Scurry’s Lightsworn in his graveyard: he had three different Lightsworn. Flores attacked with Colossal Fighter, Scurry responded with “Waboku,” and Flores ended.

Scurry drew “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid.” He Normal Summoned “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” discarded Aurkus to Special Summon Garoth. He opted not to Set “Threatening Roar.” In the End Phase he sent three cards to his graveyard with Lumina: “Solar Recharge,” Ryko, and “Charge of the Light Brigade.” He then sent Celestia and “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” to his Graveyard with Garoth to draw two cards: “Chaos Sorcerer” and “Monster Reborn”!

Flores knew he was pinned down by Scurry’s “Necro Gardna,” so he sent his “Colossal Fighter” to attack Lumina and draw it out. Scurry removed it to block the attack, and Flores Set a card to each zone. Scurry drew “Mystical Space Typhoon” next turn.

He had the Typhoon, “Monster Reborn,” “Judgment Dragon,” “Threatening Roar,” Lumina, and “Chaos Sorcerer” in hand, with Garoth and his first Lumina on the field. He Special Summoned “Judgment Dragon,” paid 1000 Life Points for “Judgment Dragon’s” effect, but Flores chained “Crush Card Virus”! He Tributed his face-down “Spirit Reaper.”

Scurry lost his in-hand “Chaos Sorcerer,” as well as his on-field Garoth and “Judgment Dragon.” The Dragon then destroyed Lumina, leaving Scurry incapable of dealing 8000 damage in one turn. He had “Monster Reborn,” Lumina, “Threatening Roar,” and “Mystical Space Typhoon” left, and hadn’t yet used his Normal Summon. Flores was still playing from behind with two cards in hand.

“Monster Reborn” let Scurry take Flores’ “X-Saber Airbellum”! He attacked for 1600 damage, forced Flores to discard his much-needed “Pot of Avarice,” and then Set “Mystical Space Typhoon” and “Threatening Roar” to finish the turn. “Go ahead.”

Flores drew back to two cards. He Set a monster and ended. Next turn Scurry drew “Breaker the Magical Warrior” and lost it to the effect of “Crush Card Virus” . He attacked with “X-Saber Airbellum” and slammed into “Summoner Monk,” which survived the attack. “My turn?” asked Flores. Scurry nodded and gave a displeased “Mm-hmm.”

Flores drew, again back to two cards. He Set another monster. Scurry drew and revealed “Foolish Burial,” Normal Summoned “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” and discarded “Foolish Burial” for her effect. He Special Summoned “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast,” then sent it to attack and destroy “Summoner Monk.” Lumina attacked the face-down; it was “Gravekeeper's Guard,” and it bounced “X-Saber Airbellum” back to Flores’ hand. The Duel stood at 6100 Life Points to 6400 with Flores leading, and Scurry ended. Time was called as Flores drew, and Scurry had ten cards left in his Main Deck.

Flores had that “X-Saber Airbellum” and two more cards in hand. He activated “Cold Wave,” Scurry chained “Threatening Roar,” and Flores Synchro Summoned “Black Rose Dragon” to wipe the field! Flores had one card left and Scurry was down to top-decking!

He drew “Judgment Dragon”! He attacked for 3000 damage, but Flores’s last card was Gorz! He Special Summoned it, and Scurry cleared Gorz and its token away for 1000 Life Points in Main Phase 2! He then sent “Waboku,” Lumina, “Monster Reincarnation,” and “Plaguespreader Zombie” to the Graveyard in his End Phase. All Flores could do next turn was Set a monster.

“Judgment Dragon” blew it away next turn – “Gravekeeper's Spy.” Scurry had the last turn, but didn’t win via time – he Special Summoned “Plaguespreader Zombie” and attacked for 3800 damage on Flores’s remaining 3400 Life Points!

A lucky “Judgment Dragon” clinches the match for Shane Scurry, locking victory and letting him move on with a 2-0 victory and a 3-0 record!
