Matt Puttman is running a promising build of a very cool Deck. It’s an aggressive LIGHT strategy built around “Chaos-End Master,” with complementary cards like “Sphere of Chaos” and “Byser Shock.” Flat out, I want to see this thing in action.
His opponent is Chris Clements, hailing from Collman, Alabama. He’s playing Blackwings, which should in theory be one of Puttman’s stronger match-ups. If Clements isn’t careful he may provide a lot of easy marks for “Chaos-End Master’s” effect, and Puttman may have an easy time controlling the match. Let’s see how it goes!
Puttman opened the match with “Solemn Judgment,” “Book of Moon,” “Mystical Space Typhoon,” “Cyber Dragon,” “Bottomless Trap Hole,” and “Chaos-End Master.” He Set Solemn, then Book, then “Mystical Space Typhoon” to finish his turn. Clements Normal Summoned “Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind,” attacked, and Clements turned it face-down with “Book of Moon.” Clements set “Threatening Roar,” lost it to “Mystical Space Typhoon” in the End Phase, and play was to Puttman.
He drew “Honest,” and Special Summoned “Cyber Dragon.” He Normal Summoned “Chaos-End Master,” attacked with it, and searched “Sphere of Chaos” with the Master’s effect when it destroyed Gale! He attacked with “Cyber Dragon” for 2100 damage, then attacked directly with the Sphere for 1600 damage. In Main Phase 2 he tuned “Chaos-End Master” to the Sphere and Synchro Summoned “Colossal Fighter.” He set “Bottomless Trap Hole” and ended with a very controlling field.
Clements activated “Allure of Darkness” next turn, drew two cards, and removed “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn” from play. He followed it up with a second Allure, checked Puttman’s Graveyard for any shred of information he could use, and then removed “Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow” from his hand to complete Allure’s cost. He Normal Summoned “Blackwing - Shura the Blue Flame” and lost it to “Bottomless Trap Hole.”
Two Set cards in the Spell and Trap Card Zone ended Clements’ turn. Puttman drew “Nova Summoner,” attacked with “Colossal Fighter,” and Clements responded with “Threatening Roar.” Puttman chained “Solemn Judgment,” and Clements chained a Solemn of his own! Puttman set “Nova Summoner” and ended with “Honest” as his last card in hand.
Clements activated “Monster Reborn” next turn, Special Summoning Gale from his Graveyard. He activated its effect to halve “Cyber Dragon’s” ATK & DEF, then attacked it. Puttman responded by activating “Honest’s” effect: “Cyber Dragon” destroyed Gale and Clements took 1050 damage. He Normal Summoned Kalut in Main Phase 2, desperately trying to protect his remaining 1150 Life Points.
Puttman drew “Enemy Controller” next turn and it was all over. He attacked Kalut with “Cyber Dragon,” turned Kalut to Defense Position with “Enemy Controller” so the 1050 ATK “Cyber Dragon” could destroy it, and then attacked for game with “Colossal Fighter.” Matt Puttman takes Duel 1 without revealing the “Nova Summoner” he Set the turn before.
Both competitors made use of their Side Decks, but Puttman finished long before Clements did. Puttman had clearly made careful plans for this easy-to-anticipate matchup, while Clements had to think long and hard about a Deck he still hadn’t seen much of. Could Clements pull this one out, or was the match-up disadvantage and surprise factor just too much to overcome?
Clements got Game 2 started with “Blackwing - Shura the Blue Flame” and a Set Spell or Trap Card. Puttman was holding “Chaos-End Master,” “Chaos Sorcerer,” “Malevolent Catastrophe,” and two copies of “Bottomless Trap Hole.” He drew “Creature Swap” for his first Draw Phase. He Set Bottomless, Set Catastrophe, and ended. Clements attacked with Shura and Puttman took the damage. He set a Spell or Trap Card to match Puttman’s and ended.
Play was back to Puttman, who drew “Lightning Vortex.” He set “Chaos-End Master,” traded it for Shura with “Creature Swap,” and was shut down by “Threatening Roar” yet again. “End my turn.” Clements took a moment to read “Chaos-End Master,” then Flip Summoned it. He activated “Mind Control” to take back his Shura, attacked with “Chaos-End Master,” and Puttman dropped to 4700 Life Points. Clements tuned Chaos-End to Shura in Main Phase 2, Synchro Summoned “Blackwing Armor Master,” and removed it from the game when Puttman flipped “Bottomless Trap Hole.” Clements set two more cards to his back row and ended.
Puttman drew “Chaos-End Master,” ended, and Puttman passed. That “Malevolent Catastrophe” was Set and ready – Clements had three cards he might lose to it if it were to resolve at this point. Puttman set a monster. Clements activated “Black Whirlwind” next turn, Normal Summoned “Blackwing - Bora the Spear,” and searched his deck for “Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind” with “Black Whirlwind’s” effect. When Bora attacked, Puttman responded with Catastrophe, forcing Clements to chain “Solemn Judgment”! He dropped to 4000 Life Points, then slammed into “Honest” for another 200 damage! Clements Special Summoned Gale in Main Phase 2, halved “Honest’s” ATK and DEF, then Synchro summoned “Blackwing Armor Master” in Attack Position. “Go ahead.”
Puttman drew and had “Lightning Voretex,” Chaos-End, “Chaos Sorcerer,” “Bottomless Trap Hole,” and “Shining Angel.” He returned “Honest” to his hand, Set a monster, then Set a Spell or Trap Card. In the End Phase Clements Tributed Armor Master for “Deck Devastation Virus,” destroying Puttman’s on-field “Shining Angel” and costing him his “Honest” and “Chaos-End Master”! It was a huge blow.
Next turn Clements activated “Monster Reborn,” Special Summoning “Chaos-End Master” but losing it to “Bottomless Trap Hole” again. He ended. Puttman drew “Book of Moon,” revealed it, and Set a Spell or Trap. Clements passed again and Puttman drew “Threatening Roar.” He Set it and ended.
Clements drew to four cards in hand but passed again. Puttman drew “Chaos-End Master,” Normal Summoned it, and attacked for 1500 damage. The Life Points now stood at 2300 to 4700, with Puttman still in the lead.
Clements Normal Summoned “Blackwing - Blizzard the Far North.” Puttman chained “Book of Moon” to Blizzard’s effect, but Clements was still able to Special Summon Bora in Defense Position. Still, Bora couldn’t attack this turn. Clements activated “Brain Control,” took “Chaos End Master,” and attacked for 1500 damage. He tuned it to Bora next turn, Synchro Summoned “Dark Strike Fighter” and Tributed it for 1400 damage. Puttman was up, and had 1800 Life Points left.
He drew “Nova Summoner,” adding it to his hand of “Lightning Vortex” and “Chaos Sorcerer.” He Normal Summoned “Nova Summoner,” tried to attack, but was rejected by another “Threatening Roar.” Clements Flip Summoned Blizzard next turn, Special Summoned Gale the Whirlwind, and halved “Nova Summoner’s” ATK & DEF. Gale attacked “Nova Summoner,” Clements ran the math and he opted not to flip “Threatening Roar.”
It was a grievous mistake. “Damage Step?” asked Clements. He activated the effect of “Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow” from his hand, and suddenly the Duel was over! A big error on Puttman’s side means this match was going to Duel 3!
Puttman opened with “Monster Reborn,” “Book of Moon,” “D. D. Warrior Lady,” “Threatening Roar,” “Heavy Storm,” and “Smashing Ground.” He set “D. D. Warrior Lady,” Set Book, and ended. Clements Set a monster, Set three cards to his back row, and ended. Puttman drew “Marshmallon” and activated “Heavy Storm”!
Clements chained “Threatening Roar,” then chained “Icarus Attack” to tribute “Blackwing - Bora the Spear” and destroy “D. D. Warrior Lady” and “Book of Moon.” Clements lost “Solemn Judgment.” Puttman set “Marshmallon,” “Threatening Roar,” and ended. Clements Normal Summoned “Blackwing - Blizzard the Far North,” Special Summoned his Bora, and attacked with Blizzard into “Marshmallon”! He opted not to Synchro Summon in Main Phase 2 and ended with two cards in hand.
Puttman Normal Summoned “Nova Summoner” and attacked Blizzard next turn, destroying it. He had “Smashing Ground” and Reborn in hand, “Threatening Roar” Set, and “Marshmallon” and “Nova Summoner” on the field. He ended with five cards total, leaving Clements to draw to four.
He attacked “Marshmallon” with Bora to pound home 1200 damage, then moved to Main Phase 2. “I’m just going to let you go.” Clements either had no defense, or was really trying to bait out an attack from Puttman.
Puttman drew “Chaos Sorcerer.” A couple tricks later and he’d traded his “Marshmallon” for “Magical Android” and attacked into Bora – Clements had Kalut the Moon Shadow to destroy the Android! Puttman ended, still unwilling to commit that “Smashing Ground.” He knew Clements would have to attack through “Nova Summoner” at some point.
Clements went for it next turn, letting Puttman Special Summon “Shining Angel” from his Deck. “Go ahead.” Puttman drew “Lightning Vortex.”
“Cards in hand?”
“Three” replied Clements. Puttman finally played “Smashing Ground,” destroyed Bora, and swung for 1400 damage with “Shining Angel.” Clements had three DARK monsters in his Graveyard. We all knew what was coming next.
He Special Summoned “Dark Armed Dragon.” He removed Blizzard for the Dragon’s effect, destroyed “Shining Angel,” and then removed Kalut. Puttman chained “Threatening Roar,” Clements set a Spell or Trap, and play was back to Puttman.
He drew “Sphere of Chaos”! He discarded it for “Lightning Vortex,” exactly what he needed to do to in order to bring “Chaos Sorcerer” into the game. Clements negated Vortex with “Solemn Judgment,” Puttman Special Summoned “Chaos Sorcerer,” and removed “Dark Armed Dragon.” “Please have nothing.”
Clements had a lot more than nothing: he activated “Black Whirlwind,” Normal Summoned “Blackwing - Sirocco the Dawn,” and Special Summoned Bora. He activated Sirocco’s effect, poured its attack into Bora, and then attacked with Bora. Once again, Clements had Kalut to finish the Duel!
Matt Puttman’s very cool Chaos-End Master Deck seemingly runs out of steam, and Chris Clements capitalizes to take two wins back-to-back! Chalk another one up for Blackwings.
