Chris Patrick is from Union, New Jersey, and has made it to the Top 32 with Lightsworn. Adam Corn traveled here from Anaheim, California, and is running a DARK Synchro Deck that packs “Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive” and multiple copies of “Black Salvo.” We watched Corn catch some seriously rough luck in his first feature match yesterday – would his luck change today?
Patrick started the match with “Gold Sarcophagus,” searching his Deck to remove “Judgment Dragon” from the game! He Normal Summoned “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” and sent “Foolish Burial,” “Monster Reborn,” and “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel” to his Graveyard.
Corn had “Allure of Darkness,” “Torrential Tribute,” “Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive,” “Scapegoat,” “Brain Control,” and “Machine Duplication.” He activated Allure, drew “Dark Armed Dragon,” and drew “Heavy Storm.” He removed his “Dark Armed Dragon,” Set Dekoichi, then Set “Heavy Storm.”
Patrick Normal Summoned “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” attacked with it, and Corn’s Dekoichi got him a draw. Patrick sent five cards to his graveyard in the End Phase and he drew one card with Garoth’s effect. He also sent “Necro Gardna” to his Graveyard.
Corn drew “Cyber Valley”! He Normal Summoned it, Special Summoned two more with “Machine Duplication,” and activated “Brain Control” to take Patrick’s Garoth. He removed it from the game along with one “Cyber Valley” to draw two cards with the Valley’s effect, removed his remaining two Valleys to draw two more, and now had a hand of “Torrential Tribute,” “Scapegoat,” “Elemental Hero Stratos,” Gorz, “Mirror Force,” “Crush Card Virus,” and “Desitny Draw.” He was playing conservatively, and wasn’t going to commit to the field this turn in order to really get the most out of that “Torrential Tribute.”
But Patrick blew it away with “Mystical Space Typhoon” next turn! He took his “Judgment Dragon” to his hand, activated “Charge of the Light Brigade,” and sent “Heavy Storm,” “Beckoning Light,” and “Solar Recharge” to his Graveyard to get “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” from his Deck. He Normal Summoned “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” attacked with her, attacked with Lumina, and Corn was down to 3500 Life Points. Lyla destroyed Corn’s face-down “Heavy Storm” in Main Phase 2 and netted a free copy of Wulf in his End Phase.
Corn Normal Summoned “Elemental Hero Stratos,” searched out “Destiny Hero – Malicious” from his Deck, and discarded it for “Destiny Draw.” He drew two cards, then removed Malicious to Special Summon another from his Deck in Attack Position. He Set “Crush Card Virus,” Set “Scapegoat,” and Set “Mirror Force.” He then sent Stratos to attack Lyla, destroying her. He finished out by Setting “Destiny Draw” to end his turn.
He activated “Crush Card Virus” in his opponent’s Draw Phase, costing Patrick Wulf and “Judgment Dragon” from his hand, plus his Wulf from the Field. That left Patrick with Lumina, “Honest,” “Foolish Burial,” and “Plaguespreader Zombie” in hand, with Lumina on the field.
Patrick activated “Foolish Burial” to send another Wulf to the Graveyard, Special Summoning it. He turned Lumina to Defense Position to dodge the “Mirror Force” he was likely reading (correctly), and attacked with Wulf into “Elemental Hero Stratos.” Corn let it go and dropped to 3200 Life Points. In Main Phase 2 Patrick discarded “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner” for his other Lumina’s effect, brought back “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” and used her to destroy Corn’s face-down “Mirror Force”! He ended his turn and sent six more cards to his Graveyard, including another “Necro Gardna.”
Corn had “Black Salvo,” “Mystic Tomato,” “Dark Grepher,” and “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness” in hand. He Normal Summoned Salvo, Special Summoned “Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive,” and cleared the field with “Black Rose Dragon” before ending his turn!
Patrick revealed his draw, because of “Crush Card Virus”: another “Honest.” He Summoned it, attacked Corn with it, and Corn decided not to Special Summon Gorz. Patrick ended his turn with “Honest” still on the field. Corn drew “Monster Reborn.”
He activated it, Special Summoning “Elemental Hero Stratos.” He searched “Destiny Hero - Plasma” from his Deck, discarded Gorz to Special Summon “Dark Grepher,” then Set “Mystic Tomato” so he could Special Summon Plasma! He targeted “Honest” with Plasma’s effect, attacked, and Patrick took the 2450 damage to drop to 5500 Life Points. Adam still had just 2100 Life Points left.
Patrick Set a monster. Corn drew, attacked with Plasma, and Patrick negated the attack with “Necro Gardna.” Corn Set his last card, the monster he top-decked this turn, and ended. He knew it was over.
Patrick Tributed his face-down monster for “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,” didn’t activate her effect (he didn’t have enough cards left in his Deck to do so), and still had that second “Honest” in his hand. He attacked with Celestia, pressed her over Plasma with “Honest,” and it was just barely enough to make game!
Chris Patrick takes a grueling Duel 1 lasting nearly 25 minutes! He narrowly avoided Decking out, and immediately went for his Side Deck. Corn did the same.
Corn started Duel 2 with “Mind Crush,” “Mirror Force,” “Gold Sarcophagus,” “Black Salvo,” “Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive,” and “Dark Grepher.” He Set Dekoichi, Set “Mind Crush,” and activated “Gold Sarcophagus” to remove “Dark Armed Dragon” from his Deck.
Patrick activated “Solar Recharge,” discarding “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” to draw two and send “Charge of the Light Brigade” and “Judgment Dragon” to his Graveyard. He activated “Heavy Storm” and Corn chained “Mind Crush,” calling “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner”: No dice. Patrick had “Trap Hole,” “Mirror Force,” two Gardnas, and “Foolish Burial,” and Corn’s miss cost him “Mirror Force.” He was going to have a tough time recovering from that.
He activated “Foolish Burial,” sent “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to his Graveyard, and Special Summoned it. Wulf attacked, Corn drew “Threatening Roar” with Dekoichi’s effect, and Patrick Set a monster. Two Set Spell and Trap Cards ended his turn.
Corn Summoned “Black Salvo,” brought back Dekoichi, and cleared the field with “Black Rose Dragon”! He passed with three cards in his hand and Patrick drew to two. He activated “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sent “Monster Reborn,” “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid,” and “Honest” to his Graveyard to get Lumina. He Normal Summoned Lumina, discarded “Necro Gardna” to bring back “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” then attacked for 2700 damage. He then sent “Necro Gardna,” “Bottomless Trap Hole,” and Lumina to his Graveyard, followed by two “Honest” and “Solar Recharge.”
Corn drew another copy of “Threatening Roar” and Normal Summoned “Dark Grepher.” It attacked, Patrick blocked with “Necro Gardna,” and Corn Set another Spell or Trap Card. Another Charge got him “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” and he Special Summoned it with Lumina’s effect. He tried to attack, but lost out to “Threatening Roar.” In the End Phase he sent ten cards to his Graveyard with Lightsworn effects, Special Summoned two copies of Wulf, and drew two cards. He had just one card left in his Deck, and Corn still had his second “Threatening Roar.”
“Dark Armed Dragon” hit Corn’s hand. He discarded it for “Dark Grepher’s” effect, “placed Destiny Hero – Malicious” from his Deck in his Graveyard, and Set the other Roar. Patrick drew his last card next turn, Tributed Lumina for “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,” and conceded when Corn revealed his face-down “Threatening Roar”!
There was a lot of Side Decking from both Duelists. Six minutes remained in the match, and both Duelists kept that in mind as they Sided. Everything hung in the balance of this last Duel. One of these competitors would Duel up to four more opponents in their quest to win the title of Champion.
Patrick opened with “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sending “Judgment Dragon,” “Torrential Tribute,” and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to his Graveyard to get “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner” from his deck. Wulf was Special Summoned. Patrick had another Charge! He sent “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” “Necro Gardna,” and “Thunder King Rai-Oh” to his Graveyard, this time getting “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior.” He Normal Summoned Lumina, discarded Garoth to Special Summon Garoth, and Set one card to end his turn. He sent two copies of “Honest” to the Graveyard in his End Phase and didn’t get a draw with Garoth.
“Mystical Space Typhoon” destroyed Patrick’s “Bottomless Trap Hole.” Corn Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, Normal Summoned “Cyber Valley,” then Set one more card to his back row.
Patrick Normal Summoned “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” activated her effect, and Corn chained “Skill Drain”! He dropped to 7000 Life Points. Patrick switched Lumina to Defense Position, attacked “Cyber Valley,” and its effect ended the Battle Phase while getting Corn another draw. Patrick activated “Monster Reborn” and Special Summoned Thunder King in Attack Position.
Corn Set “Destiny Hero - Defender,” and Wulf crashed into it next turn. Patrick dropped to 7400 Life Points. Corn got another Defender with “Reinforcement of the Army,” Set it, and Set a Spell or Trap Card. He flipped it next turn: “Trap Dustshoot,” sending back “Judgment Dragon” and leaving his opponent with “Charge of the Light Brigade,” “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast.” One minute remained in the match.
Patrick had yet another Charge. It sent Celestia, Necro, and “Judgment Dragon” to the Graveyard, then got Patrick another “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress.” Corn was in danger of losing to time. Patrick knew it, and turned all his monsters except “Thunder King Rai-Oh” to Defense Position. Corn topped a useless “Gold Sarcophagus” as time was called, and was scooping up moments later.
Adam Corn is out of the tournament, and Chris Patrick is on his way to the Top 16!
