SHONEN JUMP Championship

Daily Coverage

After taking a look at all 200 Deck lists for this event, we could see that a lot of popular predictions from players came true. However, there were a few surprises as well, and a couple of trends emerged that may prove to be uniquely Canadian. Here’s what the event looked like:

Total Event Breakdown:

Deck   # Played % of the Field
Blackwings     65 32.5%
Lightsworn    44   22%
Gladiator Beasts 28 14%
Synchro Cat  21   10.5%
Dark Armed Dragon Synchro  4.5%
Burn  4 2%
Dragons  4 2%
Gadgets  2%
Monarchs  1.5%
Zombies   2   1%
Stun Variant  2    1%
Other       14   7%

Predictably, the three Decks widely guessed to be the most promising comprised 65% of the total field: Blackwings, Lightsworn, and Synchro Cat. In addition it’s no surprise that the easy-to-build Blackwing Deck led the field in popularity with 65 Duelists playing it, while less than a third of that number of players opted to run the newcomer Synchro Cat. With so many competitors already well practiced with their Blackwing and Lightsworn Decks, it was easy to guess that while powerful, Synchro Cat wasn’t going to see as much play as the other two Decks.

But check out the huge showing from Gladiator Beasts! They outpaced Synchro Cat and clocked in as the third most popular Deck in the tournament. Gladiator Beasts have always had a strong base here in southern Ontario and a lot of competitors came into this event anticipating that trend. “Mirror of Oaths” may have been the most frequently-seen Side Deck card of the weekend.
